  1. What is smsGuardian?
    smsGuardian is a fraud prevention service which sends a text alert to those enrolled whenever the card usage hits one of the predefined rules set up by the bank.
  2. What are the predefined rules (a.k.a. transactions that will trigger a text alert)?
  • Any international transaction
  • Fuel transactions
  • Transaction authorizations greater than $100
  • 3 or more transactions in 24 hours
  • Card not present (phone or internet)
  • Out of state transactions
  • Declined transactions
  1. Does the product stop the transaction from happening?
    No, it only alerts after a transaction has authorized or declines.
  2. Do I have to reply to let a transaction go through or to stop an unauthorized transaction?
    No- This does not give the option to accept or stop the current transaction. Its only purpose is to alert that a transaction has been made and give an option to state if it was unauthorized.
  3. How does this product help to prevent fraud?
    Once a rule has been hit, an alert will be sent via text to the cardholder who can either ignore the alert if the transaction is legitimate or respond if it is fraud. A fraud response will block the card from any further use.
  4. Can anyone have smsGuardian?
    You must have a First National Bank debit or ATM card and a device that receives texts such as a cellphone.
  5. How do I sign up for smsGuardian?
    Sign up is done online through First National Bank’s website by the cardholder. Click here:
  6. Does the enrollment expire?
    Yes, cards are enrolled for 1 year. A notification of expiration will be sent as a text message prior to expiration. A response to the text is necessary to renew the service for another year.
  7. Is enrollment required to have a Debit/ATM card?
    No. This service is required to be offered to customers per MasterCard but enrollment by the customer is optional.
  8. Is there any cost to the cardholder for this service?
    Costs for the alert service are covered by the bank, however, there may be charges to the customer by their mobile carrier. Check with your carrier for any fees they may impose for incoming/outgoing texts and limits.
  9. If I no longer want to receive notifications can I cancel?
    Yes, just reply STOP to an alert or go back into your online account to cancel.
  10. Can I block time frames for receiving texts?
    Yes, during the enrollment process you can set a “Do Not Disturb” window. All alerts that were generated during that timeframe will be held and sent after the time has expired.
  11. How do I set what device I want to receive texts to?
    During the enrollment process under the Device/Create Device tab you will enter the 10 digit mobile device number and click submit. You can change this number at any time by going back into your online account.

  • You may cancel or opt-out of the service (discontinue the receipt of Alerts immediately) by texting the word “STOP” (without quotes) in reply to a Guardian Alert.  You may unsubscribe from this service entirely on the website.  Cardholders may also discontinue alerts by texting the word STOP to 27576.
  • The number of alerts you receive will be based on your card usage.  You will not receive more than one message per transaction on each enrolled card.  (See Q&A above for further details.)
  • Some mobile service providers require that a 30-day subscription reminder message be sent to their customers participating in the smsGuardian program.  You will receive an alert message every 30 days remind you of a subscription if your mobile service provider is Sprint, Nextel, Boost, or Virgin.  The alert message will display as: “Reminder: You have subscribed to Guardian transaction alerts from First National Bank.  Message and data rates may apply.  Reply HELP for help.  Reply STOP to cancel.”
